Abstract
High speed cutting tools are loaded heavier than in conventional cutting. The hazard of damage by centrifugal force especially in areas of high loading as clamping mechanisms and surround holes or edges is very high. Centrifugal loads may cause tool deflection and decreased accuracy or reduced clamping forces. Therefore high speed cutting tools have to satisfy high demands on security and stiffness. Moreover easy handling and high acceleration necessitate a lightweight construction. The contradictory demands for low mass, high static and dynamic stiffness, high accuracy and multi-purpose applicability require the application of new design principles and advanced materials. A new approach is the application of metal foam components to reduce weight and to increase damping. The paper also discusses further tendencies in the design of high speed cutting tools as "intelligent" adaptive tools and coatings. Numerical simulations (FEA) which facilitate a fast and cost-efficient design process of high speed cutting tools by reducing expensive empirical test series are shown exemplarily.
