Abstract
A run-based line digitizing algorithm is applied to accelerate the ray traversal process when ray tracing height fields. Traversing the ray through the base plane of a height field the first intersection point of ray and surface is sought. The run primitive shows significant advantages over the cell primitive. A run is hierarchical structure, whereas a run of a order n is a collection of runs of order n- 1. An order 1 run is a collection of grid cells. The run structure also present important structural information that can be used to simplify the ray traversal inside a run when testing for possible ray/surface intersection.
