Worldwide Lab - Guaranteed productivity increases by learning within the network
Abstract

As a reaction to globalisation, many companies have distributed their production processes across global production networks. In order to optimise such production networks, the activities and tasks of the individual locations were examined and improved in the past. The interaction and exchange between the respective locations in the network offers new potential for optimisation. Especially through the increasing connectivity of manufacturing in the context of Industry 4.0 and the worldwide availability of this data in cloud environments, more information can be exchanged among the different production sites. On this basis, the concept of the Worldwide Lab was developed as part of the Internet of Production (IoP). The Worldwide Lab is designed to provide all data points in global production networks and to process them as experimental observation data. This database offers several advantages compared to classical experimental setups. On the one hand, considerably more factors can be taken into account since the number of experiments is much higher. On the other hand, already existing data can be used ex post for the validation of hypotheses. For the successful introduction and utilisation of the Worldwide Lab, various aspects have to be considered which are explained in the following subchapters and demonstrated with case studies. Initially, the technical basis must be created with the access of usable data. To realise the potential of this database, the company must furthermore operate with learning processes that are executed by flexible teams.
