Emission tests of various materials for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) which are hazardous to humans and the environment indicate a time-dependent emission behaviour. The present study shows a basic trend of calculated emission concentrations depending on a prediction model which was proven by empirically determined data. Initially, a clustering of VOCs was carried out on the basis of available data and possible factors that could have an influence on the emission behaviour of VOCs were considered. Afterwards a prioritization of the influencing factors basing on experimental observations and published data was performed. Emission concentration measurements were performed using a high emissive polymeric material as reference example and an environmental chamber. Subsequently, a mathematical model was used for graphical simulation. The real data verify the calculation model based on VOC-clustering and its application to VOC-prediction of materials.
