Innovative technologies for cryogenic grinding
Abstract

Nowadays, an extensive trend towards fine structuring of solid materials is observed. Rapid spreading diffusion of research disciplines like micro, nano and surface technology reflect this development. In addition to the synthesis of fine powders, the fine grinding or comminution becomes increasingly important. While the level of development of fine grinding technology for brittle materials is very high and the reachable grain sizes are very small, thermoplastic, elastic or fibrous materials can often not be grinded at ambient temperatures. In those few cases when the grinding is possible, this results to be highly energy consuming and therefore cost intensive. For these materials the cryogenic grinding is the most effective process. In addition to optimising the operation of conventional plants, Fraunhofer UMSICHT has developed an innovative technology which allows to avoid the use of LN2 partially or completely, depending on the material. This technique is based on the employment of a refigeration plant. For many materials, this temperature is sufficient for being brittled. Should this temperature be not sufficient, the material may be exposed to further cooling in a cryo screw with LN2 In order to perform the optimisation described, a pilot plant has been erected at the technical laboratory of Fraunhofer UMSICHT.
