Titel
Experimental characterization of reaction thresholds for polymer bonded high explosives under moderate mechanical loading
Abstract
In modern munitions often polymer bonded high explosives (PBX) are used. During launching or impact of these munitions the PBX payload experiences high dynamical loading. These mechanical loads can lead to reaction processes and possible final explosion of the confined high explosive (HE). It is a dissipation mechanism controlled through a combination of pressure and shear stress loading of the reactive grains in the HE. The aim of the present work is to characterize threshold values for onset of this reaction process. For this purpose we developed an experimental set up, the so called safety threshold testing (STT) device and determined in an extensive test series the loading conditions that lead to the onset of reaction phenomena. Different reaction criteria are defined and evaluated experimentally and the method is applied to the PBX material HX 497. The results are the basis for the assessment of munitions safety during military operations.
