Nowadays, lightweight design and construction has become a key concept of innovative design solutions. At the same time, terms such as “multi-functionality” and “resource efficiency” are becoming increasingly relevant. In order to meet these challenges, new horizons must be explored in all areas of product design and, most importantly, new approaches have to be adopted. Substantial benefits can already be achieved in the materials selection phase by choosing so-called “smart materials”. In this context, the shape memory alloys (SMAs) offer particularly promising perspectives. An overview about the new VDI guideline 2248 of shape memory technology will be given.
