Standard pulse width modulation techniques in today's inverters for electric vehicle drives operate with a fixed switching frequency. Due to the switching pulses, current harmonics at specific orders cause flux harmonics in the air gap of the electric machine. Radial force harmonics resulting from magnetic flux excite the machine housing at specific frequencies. These so-called PWM orders can be avoided by using a randomized PWM scheme. Moreover, we present a direct torque control algorithm that inherently does not use fixed switching frequencies and thus avoids PWM excitation orders.
