Titel
Design and performance of novel aircraft structures with folded composite cores
Abstract
The chapter presents the current state of the art in design, analysis and performance of novel sandwich structures with open cellular composite cores of 'foldcore,' manufactured by folding aramid paper sheets into three-dimensional structures. By varying foldcore materials and cell geometry, composite sandwich structures may be developed with high energy absorption suitable for use in aircraft structures under impact loads. Micromechanics models are developed for cellular cores and used in finite element (FE) models to simulate progressive damage and collapse mechanisms and for design of foldcore structures subjected to impact loads. Low- and high-velocity impact tests are reported on foldcore sandwich panels with hard and soft body projectiles and used to validate the design analysis procedures being developed.
