Titel
Self-healing EBC material for gas turbine applications
Abstract
This chapter examines Ytterbium bulk mono‐silicate with dispersed silicon carbide particles as a novel material concept of self‐healing EBCs for non‐oxide ceramic matrix composites. The ability of crack healing of the composite was analyzed during furnace oxidation and burner rig tests on pre‐cracked samples with 5 and 10 vol‐% SiC. Superior crack‐healing effects were observed in case of the 10 vol‐% SiC containing material especially after oxidation tests at 1200°C and 1400°C. A drastic increase of strength was measured on the pre‐cracked samples with 10 vol‐% SiC after oxidation in comparison to the samples after fabrication. The mechanism of crack healing was identified as a microstructural transformation as the consequence of SiC oxidation and subsequent reaction of the oxidation product SiO2 with the ytterbium silicate.
