Besides the well-known production volume, changes in design may also cause changes in the manufacturing technology, which consequently has a great influence on product cost. This work investigates the manufacturing of electric motor shafts in China. The relationship between shaft design and manufacturing technology in terms of cost is illustrated under the condition of a fixed production volume. The proposed model facilitates the selection of cost-efficient manufacturing technologies to fulfill the design requirements. Finally, the influences of design changes on production costs are analyzed and the significance of this model is demonstrated.
