Abstract
Numerical investigations with finite element models are a powerful option used in combination with geotechnical model tests to clarify the load-deformation behavior of foundations. A crucial issue is the correct representation of the installation effects and the load history in the numerical model. A recent common practice is the numerical implementation of special methods capable to deal with large soil deformations. In this paper the challenges emerging from performing numerical simulations with the Coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian (CEL) method in an elasto-plastic model will be presented for jacked piles and circular footings. The results of the numerical simulations will be compared with experimental evidence obtained from large scale model tests carried out in saturated non-cohesive soil. The analysis includes the evaluation of the potentials and limitations of the CEL method to represent the installation process, the stiffness and the load bearing capacity of shallow and piled foundations.
