Abstract
The field of "Assembly" represents the last step before a product reaches the customer. In this field there still is a huge potential for automation and thus for cost reduction. Efficient assembly has a strong impact on all stages of the production chain from design and development over production up to sales and distribution. All demands of the market and customer needs, such as a large number of product variants, cost and time efficiency as well as delivery reliability, converge in the area of assembly. In the First CIRP Seminar on Assembly Systems in Stuttgart, industrial and scientific partners from all over the world present latest results on a large variety of topics related to assembly systems. ISAS 2006 covers the most relevant areas such as: Innovative Assembly Systems - Micro Assembly - Modelling and Simulation - Flexible Automation - Assembly Planning, - Automation and Robotics - Logistics for Assembly - Maintenance and Disassembly - Reconfiguration of Assembly Systems - Quality Management - Information Management - Engineering and Education - Virtual Reality for Assembly.
