Abstract
The fast scaling of extracted average power from single-mode fiber lasers and amplifiers around 1 μm slowed down due to the fundamental limits arising from nonlinear optical effects. For continuous wave radiation, either stimulated Raman scattering (SRS), for broadband emission, or stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in the case of narrow linewidth are limiting the output power even in large-mode area fibers. In oscillator configuration, Ytterbium (Yb) -doped fiber lasers are limited in their linewidth due to spectral broadening (several nm) and SRS [1]. Current state of the art narrow linewidth (~GHz) single mode fiber amplifers are reported at a 1 kW level [2].
