Title

Migration of Acetaldehyde from PET bottles into natural mineral water

Abstract
Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is widely used as a packaging material for mineral water. A degradation product of PET is acetaldehyde, which might influence the organoleptic properties of PET packed mineral water. Therefore, knowledge about the diffusion behavior of acetaldehyde in PET is of interest for the mineral water filling companies as well as for the preform and bottle manufacturing companies. This article includes details of methods for the determination of acetaldehyde in PET and the migration of acetaldehyde from PET into mineral water.
