Additive Manufacturing is rendering new possibilities in the design of materials and their properties. It is known that alloys processed by laser beam melting (LBM) show a characteristic, parameter dependent microstructure resulting from the local application of a high-energy laser source. Furthermore, the selective nature of the process enables a variable local creation of material and therefore local manipulation of microstructure to achieve a purposive material design. To produce a Designed Material by SLM, it is necessary to gain a detailed understanding about the influence of the manufacturing parameters as well as the exposure strategy. Experimental studies were carried out on AlSi10Mg to investigate the impacts of manufacturing parameters and exposure strategies. Based on derived parameter sheets, parameter sets are optimized for Designed Materials. Tests show their potential under mechanical load as well as an increased porosity. Investigations for future porosity reduction are conducted.
