Magnetic Pulse Welding (MPW) is a solid-state joining process using pulsed magnetic fields. The process is especially attractive for the welding of dissimilar metals because no external heat, which might lead to brittle intermetallic phases or other defects, is transferred into the joining zone. Multi-material joints have an increasing importance for the implementation of lightweight concepts in automotive and aerospace industry, for instance. Specifically tubular joining partners are widely used in these sectors. The manuscript focuses on MPW of two cylindrical parts made of aluminum and steel. Potentials are shown, how unwanted deformations of the inner part can be significantly reduced by an optimized process design. Removable and reusable Polyurethane inserts are applied for backing the parent. Different pulse generators with distinctively different pulse characteristics are compared. Moreover, the manuscript shows how the Monitoring of the deformation of the outer part by photonic Doppler velocimetry can support the process analysis.
