Titel
DC connected modular power converter system for microgrids
Abstract
A flexible power flow control system for distributed electricity generation, storage and consumption for small industrial buildings has been subject of a public funded research project, which has been conducted by two industrial and two research partners. Power converter modules in different power rating classes (1.5 kVA up to 50 kVA) have been developed using 3 level or 2 level topology. Each of them can be operated either in AC or DC mode for different types of electricity generation, storage or loads. The entire function is selectable by means of digital control software from a bunch of software defined operating modes. A power system contains different types of power converters, which are connected over a DC bus, containing a system controller, which configures the power modules and optimizes energy flow during system operation. The system controller connects to a server via internet for maintenance issues like software and firmware updates for the system controller and power modules. Thus, new functionality or compliance to new or changed regulations can be applied during the expected system lifetime of about 20 years. Maintenance is simplified due to the software compatibility of spare parts, even if they will be based on different technology or on different devices. Charge control of electric vehicles has been integrated into the system and the power flow control optimization. The converters are equipped with features to stabilize the external AC grid (e.g. reactive power control, harmonics cancelation, short term active power delivery). The project has been funded by the German program ZIM, which supports SMEs to develop innovative technology.
