In this study initial procedural and tribological investigations were conducted to deposit tungsten carbide coatings (WC) as tool coatings for the high-temperature forming of titanium. The main goal was a reduction of the adhesive tool wear by a combination of the advantages of nickel-base alloys as high temperature tool material with the tribological properties of WC to form self-lubricating oxides (e.g. Magneliphases). The WC coatings were deposited by magnetron sputtering in reactive and non-reactive mode on nickel-base samples. Furthermore, WC coatings were modified by chrome, silicon or molybdenum. For a tribological evaluation of the WC coatings pin-ondisc-tribometer tests were conducted in the temperature range of 750 °C to 950 °C within an inert gas atmosphere against the titanium alloy TiAl6V4. The Investigation demonstrates the potential of WC coatings to reduce titanium adhesions and the possibilities to improve the oxidation and wear resistance of the coating based on a coating modification.
