Abstract
DE 10063198 A UPAB: 20020722 NOVELTY - Precipitation of polymer solution (I) involves treating a substrate with a modified (I) in solvent(s) (II), precipitation in a non-solvent (III) and removing (II) and (III) by washing or evaporation. (I) contains finely-divided, homogeneously dispersed gel, which swells in (III), and, after precipitation, additional pores are formed by shrinking the gel particles by phase transition. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - Precipitation of polymer solutions (I) to produce porous, permeable, voluminous polymer coatings on a substrate, involves: (1) treating the substrate with a modified (I) in solvent(s) (II), which is stable during processing; (2) precipitation in a non-solvent (III); and (3) removing (II) and (III) by washing or evaporation. The novel features are that: (a) (I) contains a finely-divided, homogeneously dispersed gel, which swells in (III), can be sensitized, has regulated permeation in the swollen state in a miscible (II)/(III) system and has a switching temperature above the processing temperature of (I) and below the boiling temperature of (II); (b) (I) modified with the gel is applied to the substrate in the usual way, depending on its dynamic viscosity; and (c) after precipitation, additional pores are formed by shrinking the gel particles by phase transition by releasing (III) from the swollen gel by heating to temperature equal to or above the switching temperature of the gel, pressure, changing the potential by shifting the pH or applying an electric potential. USE - The process is especially useful for providing fabric with functional properties, e.g. permeability and ad- and absorption, especially for the shoe and clothing industry and for other technical purposes. ADVANTAGE - One existing process uses dimethylformamide as solvent (which is costly and environmentally unfriendly) and usually needs long residence times in the precipitation bath, depending on the coating thickness. Others, based on evaporation coagulation, use special polyurethanes dissolved in low-boiling solvents or a prepolymer, which gives only very thin coatings. The present process avoids these drawbacks and gives porous, permeable, voluminous coatings. The pore distribution can be controlled and the thickness and pore structure can be suited to the requirements.
