DE 19918811 A UPAB: 20010224 NOVELTY - Prestressed safety glass with a wipe-proof and porous silica antireflection layer is produced by coating suitable glass with a colloidal-disperse solution, which is obtained by hydrolytic condensation of (organo)silane(s) and/or precondensate(s) and also contains organic polymer with hydroxy (OH) and/or imino (NH) group(s) and a molecular weight of 200-500000, with 0.1-100 mmole polymer/mole silane. The glass is dried, heated and chilled. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - Prestressed safety glass with a wipe-proof and porous silica antireflection layer is claimed. It is produced by coating a glass of the usual type for making prestressed safety glass with a colloidal-disperse solution. This is obtained by hydrolytic condensation of (organo)silane(s) of formula (I) and/or precondensate(s) of (I) with water or moisture, optionally in the presence of a solvent and/or catalyst. RaSiX4-a (I) R = an organic group with 1-10 carbon (C) atoms and optionally oxygen (O) and/or sulfur (S) atoms and/or amino groups in the chain; X = hydrogen (H), halogen, hydroxy (OH), alkoxy, acyloxy, alkylcarbonyl, alkoxycarbonyl or NR's; R' = H, alkyl or aryl; and a = 0, 1 or 2 The solution also contains organic polymer(s) with OH and/or imino (NH) group(s) and a molecular weight of 200-500000, as colloidal solution. The molar ratio of polymer to organic modified silane is 0.1-100 mmole/mole silane. The coated glass is dried, heated to not less than 600 deg. C for removing the organic constituents and prestressing and chilled thermally. An INDEPENDENT CLAIM is also included for the production of the coated safety glass in this way. USE - The coated safety glass is used for covering solar collectors, for photovoltaic cells and for glazing in construction (all claimed). It can also be used for vehicle windscreens. ADVANTAGE - Multilayer antireflection coatings based on interference are effective only over a narrow range of wavelengths and not for the broad band solar spectrum, as they greatly increase reflection outside the design wavelengths. Single layers diluted with air to give a very low refractive index are effective but generally not wipe-proof or unsuitable for use on safety glass. The present coatings are suitable for use on safety glass and wipe-proof and have a refractive index up to 1.22.
