For a safe design of new buildings or for the assessment of damages in existing buildings a representative exterior climate is necessary. Especially for constructions which react sensitively on the amount of driving rain an assessment with thermal reference years e.g. Test Reference Years (TRY) is not suitable (Christoffer, 2004). Within the official research cluster energy efficient buildings (ENOB) the Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics (IBP) developed new Hygrothermal Reference Years (HRY) for Germany including all required climate elements for hygrothermal simulations. The validation of the new reference years were carried out by comparing the hygrothermal behavior of building components simulated with both: the new HRY and real measured data over several years.
