Abstract
DE 10108779 A UPAB: 20030117 NOVELTY - Production of permanent visible marks of large area on the surface of stainless steel, comprises bringing an area of over 20 cm2 into contact with an electrolyte and applying an electric potential to the substrate. The composition of the electrolyte is selected so that a black color is obtained by oxidation of the stainless steel surface. The electrolyte is then removed completely. USE - The process is used for producing permanent visible marks of large area on the surface of stainless steel, especially stainless steel swimming pools (all claimed). ADVANTAGE - Stainless steel is normally marked with paints and lacquers but the marks are not permanent and must be renewed periodically. Electrochemical methods have been used for making relatively small marks, e.g. signatures. If existing electrolytes, which give brown marks, are used on relatively large areas, the marks are very speckled and irregular and also acts as a seat of corrosion. The present process gives more stable, permanently visible large black marks, which do not lead to corrosion.
