Combining flash sintering/sinterforging with hybrid FAST/SPS technology for oxide and non-oxide materials
Abstract
This chapter discusses how field assisted sintering or spark plasma sintering (""FAST/SPS"") is an important sintering technology for the material developer due to its typical advantages like high heating and cooling rates with low thermal gradients, and consequently rapid densification. The chapter reports the main characteristics of the flash sintering method derived from experimental results on 3YSZ powder. In the experiment, 3YSZ powder (Tosoh TZ-3YB) was calcined in air at 500°C for 5h. For each experiment an amount of 1.2g of the calcined powder was filled in a cylindrical die made of hexagonal Boron Nitride with a cavity of 9.5 mm diameter. The experiment was performed using the HP mode (hot pressing), at a compaction pressure of 10 MPa, a heating rate of 25 K/min to 1600°C and a dwell time of 20 min, followed by natural cooling. The experiment was repeated using identical conditions, but now using the Flash/FAST mode, which is a HP mode with an additional electrical field strength applied to the sample.
