The product mixture formed during reforming of all kind of fuels such as hydrocarbons and alcohols is named reformate (Kolb 2008). The products of the reforming reaction are hydrogen and carbon monoxide (see entry “Catalytic Reforming of Methane and Other Hydrocarbons”) unless methanol is applied as feed, which produces mainly carbon dioxide instead. The thermodynamic equilibrium of the reforming reaction itself is equivalent to full conversion of all kinds of fuels except for methane. The conversion of methane is limited by the equilibrium of the methanation reaction, which is the reverse reaction of methane steam reforming.
