A novel combination of heat pipes and shape memory alloy actuators is proposed. By the integration of a shape memory alloy actuator inside a heat pipe a self-regulating thermal switch is realized applicable to problems that require intelligent temperature control solutions. The underlying concept uses a piston that increases or reduces the available condenser region of the heat pipe according to the current temperature and therefore provides the possibility of enabling or deactivating the heat flux, respectively. Due to the integration of the actuator, no external components are needed for the switch operation.
