In this study a silver ion-exchange procedure of glass powders for front side metallization pastes was investigated. Suchlike process can be easily integrated in the glass powder production by additional step whereby the ready milled glass powder is dispersed in a silver salt melt for a certain time. Pastes containing ion-exchanged glass powders showed significant efficiency increases up to 43 % (relative). The increase is seen in two effects. First, the incorporation of silver ions in the paste glass partly skips the need of silver dissolution in the paste glass during the firing cycle which simplifies the silver transport kinetics and reduces the total transport time. Second, the silver concentration in ion-exchanged glasses is more homogeneous. Obviously, this effects an even silver precipitation and wafer etching which reduces shunting effects.
