Recycling of used wood presentation of the polish-german project
Abstract
In 1987 the United Nations formulated the following definition of sustainability: "Sustainable development is the development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs". Applied to global forestry and the timber-processing industry, this implicates that current activities of the sector (stand/silvicultural strategies, harvesting management, production processes, timber consumption, etc.) are not to affect the productivity of our forests or destroy the fundament of sustainable future productions. That is, depletion of forest ecosystems due to unsustainable forest management driven by intense competition between energetic and substantial utilization. Rising timber demands for substantial and energetic uses can be satisfied by enhanced capacities of the timber processing industry. This results in increased timber demands, which can be satisfied by enhanced harvesting and/or the implementation of a more effective timber utilization system. The only solution is the realization of an effective raw material management system by implementing a cascade-use-model for the processing of wooden biomass. To ensure both, industrial development and sustainable management of our natural forest resources for the long term, innovative concepts and technologies for raw-material effective timber processing are urgently needed. A crucial aspect of such an effective management is to promote the recycling of recovered wood assortments. To achieve this goal on an international scale, the main aim of the Polish-German Project is to provide solutions concerning all important aspects for the processing of recovered wood (legal regulations, mobilization & logistics, sorting technologies, processing of recovered material, and marketing) in Poland and Germany.
