Titel
Numerical simulation of fracture and failure dynamics in brittle solids
Abstract
We investigate the failure behavior of dense brittle materials such as ceramics on different length and time scales based on two different numerical approaches. Within the framework of molecular dynamics simulations we propose anew mesoscopic model for the description of granular brittle matter using particles. The two-dimensional variant discussed here has only three free model parameters, but is able to reproduce many salient features of macroscopic ceramics under compressive, tensile and shock impact load. Alternatively, we model the explicit three-dimensional grain structure of ceramics on the micron length scale, as observed in polished micrograph sections.
