Improving energy efficiency in open-cast mining operations through simulative studies of competing flexibilities
Abstract
Coal mining operations are not just a primary source for the generation of electricity but also a large consumer thereof. Hence, the optimisation of the power station and mine tandem is a prime concern to retain profitability despite the surging market shares of renewable energy sources. This paper describes the use of discrete event simulation (DES) for modelling a lignite open-cast mine to identify and analyse potentials for energy efficiency therein. In particular, the characteristics of the real system as well as the procedure for creating the model are presented. By means of the developed simulation model influenceable operational procedures, feasible margins for change, as well as associated effects can be determined.
