Quality assurance in the wood products industry comprises tasks like the identification of different decors or the measurement of discolorations on decorated surfaces. These tasks do not require a complete surface scan but a high color sensitivity. Therefore camera sensors and image processing systems are often not suitable. As an alternative color sensors can be used which are integrated in a PC module, include a light source and use a fibre optic bundle to a measuring head positioned closely above the moving surface on a conveyor belt to obtain a line scan. WKI developed a system capable to solve identification tasks (e.g. for floor products) with a low-cost sensor and a fuzzy-based computation method. Discolorations on decorated board products (e.g. caused by temperature deviations in the press) can be detected using a similar set-up but with UV light and a spectroscopic sensor with a high resolution in the wavelength spectrum. Due to very different tasks in the industry initial studies are recommended before an application is designed.
