Titel
Influence of uncertain support boundary conditions on the buckling load of an axially loaded beam-column
Abstract
Slender beam-columns loaded by axial compressive forces may buckle when the forces exceed the buckling load. This critical load strongly depends on the beam-column's support boundary conditions. During structural design, these conditions are, at most times, assumed to be constant. In technical structures, however, boundary conditions are mostly imperfect and may vary during operation, so that the buckling load becomes uncertain. In this paper, uncertainty in the buckling load of a beam-column with circular cross-section due to varying support boundary conditions and varying cross-section radius is investigated mathematically. The buckling load is calculated for independently varying support boundary conditions of either one or both beam-column supports as well as different slenderness ratios. The analysis shows that the influence of uncertainty in the rotational support stiffness and the cross-section radius has major effects on the buckling load of the considered beam-column.
