Systematic approach for environmental hazard ranking of new chemicals
Abstract
A computerized scoring system is proposed using the Base Set data of the European Community's chemicals legislation to assess the environmental hazard of new chemicals. The main criteria of a chemical's potential for exposure and effects in the environmental compartments air, soil and water are scored and displayed in a simple graph. The system discriminates chemicals with high hazard from those with no significant indications of hazard or those for which observation or additional information is needed. The output of the system points out the features to concentrate on in subsequent assessment steps.
