Today, software inspections have proven in theory and practice to be a very powerful defect detection technique throughout the whole life-cycle of a software project. But even thirty years after the introduction of inspections they are not well adopted in today's industry, although many attempts have been made to develop new specialized types of inspections for practical purposes. The limited industrial application seems to be arising out of two major reasons: On the one hand there is very little existing knowledge about what drives inspection effectiveness and therefore little repeatability of good inspection results can be guaranteed. On the other hand there is no integral view on inspections that allows a company to assemble the best possible inspection out of many possible varying inspection processes with respect to given goals. This thesis tries to overcome especially the last fact by proposing an initial decision-process for inspection planning and as a second result a list of open questions that should be investigated in future research to support successful inspection planning. An implementation of the proposed decision-support-process by a prototypical support-tool will additionally provide practical guidance for inspection planning.
