Efficient technologies are without alternatives. Shortage of resources and climate change increase the meaning of energy- and material efficiency as new, economically relevant dimensions for processes of planning, operation and optimization.
Thus the essential challenge for businesses in the manufacturing industry lies in the development of strategies in order to reduce cost, but also the use of resources and energy as well as emissions. By comprehension of temperature and strain rate as active and controllable process parameters in forming operations the number of process steps could be reduced significant as well the quality and complexity of manufactured components could be improved.
This contribution describes current challenges of vehicle manufacturing and demonstrates the relevance for production engineering and forming technology in particular. Furthermore approaches are presented for tackling these challenges. A holistic view is applied to product development, forming technology and manufacturing systems.
