Titel
Non-destructive evaluation for advanced lightweight structures
Abstract
Advanced lightweight structures become more and more important in the automotive area due to governmental regulations and restrictions in terms of emission. Besides advanced steels and aluminum also fiber reinforced polymers and new joining technologies like adhesive bonding are used for lightweight design in order to meet the above mentioned requirements. In order to improve the quality and costs of these advanced lightweight structures non-destructive testing and evaluation over the whole life cycle is one crucial key technology. Non-destructive evaluation can be applied, e.g. for materials characterization, inspection of material defects, control and monitoring of manufacturing processes and system components up to material identification for recycling. In this paper new approaches for non-destructive methods are presented which offer a significant advantage in terms of quality and cost management of future advanced materials and manufacturing processes. Furthermore it can be shown, that additional improvements can be achieved when several non-destructive testing methods are combined.
