Requirements engineering for communities of practice: Building the ReqMan community
Abstract
In this paper we describe our experiences eliciting and modeling the requirements for an online community-of-practice (CoP) for requirements engineering (the ReqMan CoP). We begin the paper with a brief review of the concept of a community of practice and examples of its application within software engineering. We then move on to describe the background and setting of the ReqMan project and the target participants for the community. The main part of the paper describes our experience in eliciting the social and technical requirements for the CoP alongside the phases and activities that were involved. Part of the challenge in gathering these requirements involved adapting existing methods, guidelines and techniques within requirements engineering (RE) and the literature on CoPs in order to suit the particular demands of the ReqMan target community (e.g., specific requirements for collaborative learning). The outcomes from the paper include a set of key lessons learned from our experiences, the aim of which being that they may prove to be reusable by others building similar platforms within RE and software engineering more generally. We also describe in detail our approach for eliciting and modeling requirements for CoPs based upon established RE and software engineering principles.
