Different materials adsorb large quantities of vapor phase hydrogen peroxide (VPHP) during the decontamination period with a subsequent slow desorption phase when the controlled environment, e.g. isolator, is aerated. A wrongly-chosen material can thus cause extremely long aeration periods. This phenomenon is one of the main reasons why there is a discrepancy between theoretical and real values when calculating the length of time required to aerate an environment sterilized by means of VPHP (isolators, hospitals, cleanrooms, locks, etc.). The article addresses this problem in detail and goes on to describe a standardized testing method and show exemplary test results.
