A synthetic pathway is described to construct thermoresponsive freestanding nanomembranes at the aqueousair interface of a pendant drop. Dynamic control of the reaction kinetics allows formation of viscoelastic interfaces supporting anisotropic stresses and mechanical stability, which can be tuned by external stimuli.
