Development of an unlocking system for connector testing modules based on shape memory alloys
Abstract

The unlocking system discussed in this thesis is applied in test procedures of various electrical connectors in the automotive industry. Electrical connectors are used in all types of vehicles varying in size, number of requered pins and and holding or latching mechanisms. This variety of characteristics and needs results from the location and the scope of use of each connector. The functions range from simple transmission of information between the gateway, actuator, sensor and control unit to transmission of power supply, generator and starter. To prove the function of the connectors and their wiring inspection systems are developed and provided by DIGALOG GmbH. Therefor special testing modules with pneumatic unlocking were designed. The aim of the thesis is to replace these testing modules with an electronic release system based on shape memory alloys. Connectors which have been certified as properly functional should be unlocked and ejected after the test procedure. It should be possible to unlock defective connectors with a manual mechanism. The current pneumatic unlocking systems of DIGALOG GmbH represents the basis for this thesis. The application of smart materials such as shape memory alloys, dielectric elastomers and piezoelectric ceramics increases steadily in the automotive and supplier industry. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate several unlocking concepts using shape memory alloys and to find a preferred concept. A prototype should demonstrate the function and performance of the preferred unlocking system.
