Dynamic thermographic techniques with different temporal excitation schemes are discussed and compared. A key application is the thickness measurement of industrial ceramic coatings on curved surfaces. Rules for optimised excitation profiles can be deduced from analytical calculations. Non-optical excitation by hot air, electromagnetic waves or ultrasound may help to avoid the problem of optical absorptivity for some tasks and provides defect-selective imaging.
