Battery Thermal Management using Phase Change Slurries
Abstract
A major issue in the twenty-first century is the sustainable use of energy, including reduction of carbon footprints, in order to curtail global warming. Electric vehicles (EV) have great potential to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, since passenger cars are responsible for about 14 % of these emissions. However, EV are not yet satisfactorily developed in terms of electrochemical energy storage in batteries. One of the most critical aspects of this technology in addition to range, safety, and life cycle is an appropriate battery thermomanagement. This article shows an innovative and more efficient approach considering the battery thermomanagement. First, we developed a model, based both on weather and driving cycle data, in order to investigate the total cooling and heating energy requirements for standard lithium ion battery cells in an electric vehicle. Second, we investigated the potential of Phase Change Slurries (PCS) to meet the battery thermomanagement requirements using a passive cooling approach. In addition, active cooling was considered in order to cover temperature peaks. The PCS, a paraffin/water dispersion with a melting temperature between 25 and 30 °C is used for buffering heat and as heat transportation medium as well.
