Funktionale Materialien für Elektroden
Abstract
Energy storage is a key technology for a successful change from conventional towards renewable energy technologies. Due to fluctuation of renewable energy, energy storage devices are required to avoid waste of energy and to provide it on demand. However, special requirements demand high-performance energy storage technologies. Electrochemical double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) or supercapacitors are important components for energy storage technologies due to their high power densities. They are extremely fast chargeable but can store only a small amount of energy. Battery technologies can store larger amounts of energy, but require long charging times. Furthermore there are safety issues due to limited thermo stability and the lifetimes need to be improved. Therefore new functional materials and innovative production processes for industrial applications are required in order to enhance existing energy storage technologies and enable innovative customized storage systems. For that reason, the experts of Fraunhofer IPA are working on new electrodes for the next generation energy storage devices. A particular aim is to maximize the electrode surface and make it available for electrochemical reactions. Nanomaterials may achieve extraordinary high surfaces due to their small structure.
