We have generated second-harmonic (SH) signal in lithium niobate (LiNbO3) nanowires (NWs) to locally excite fluorescent dye in typical cell staining concentration. We show the second-order behavior of the SH signal in a NW with cross-section of 400x600 nm2. A guided SH power of 63±6 pW is needed to detect dye excitation in a 1 ?g/ml DAPI dye solution. We also perform simulations to define that the LiNbO3 NWs with cross-sections down to 40×60nm2 are potentially able to produce the threshold amount of the SH power.
