In the paper, a novel system concept for monitor-ing and evaluating mechanical stresses in forming presses, and its integration into a higher-level e-maintenance strategy will be presented. It involves a simulation concept that use a limited number of real physical strain sensors in order to extract and generate "virtual sensor" signals. These represent actual load and stress situations on locations that are crucial for machine stability but are inaccessible for real measurement or even buried inside the frame structure. This information will be used to generate a real load history of forming presses that will be a novel base for optimal planning of predictive maintenance activities. This core monitoring system is embedded into a networked environment of an e-maintenance cloud, linking a variety of information sources like enterprise resource planning.
