Abstract
Self-acting air bearings made of glass ceramic are a interesting way for modern applications on the field of precision engineering. Over the last decade, air bearings have become more and more important for high speed opto-mechanical applications. Rotating mirrors, prisms and even complex optical systems for the guiding of light inside illuminating, scanning or printing devices are operated at increasingly higher rotational speeds. At the same time demands on accuracy and durability have greatly increased. This paper presents the latest theoretical and practical results from investigations into self-acting air bearings based on glass ceramic.
