Abstract
Magnesium is the most important metallic fuel in pyrotechnics. Due to its physical properties magnesium is able to form a stable diffusion flame. Metals, which meet the so-called Glassman criterion, are also able to undergo stable combustion processes replacing magnesium in certain applications. These include some 4f-metals: Samarium, Europium, Thulium and Ytterbium. The combustion behavior of these metals was hither to unknown and has been studied by us.
The combustion of the pure metals and their mixtures with Teflon in air and in pure oxygen was investigated. The combustion temperatures were determined and UV/Vis spectra were recorded. All reactions were highly exothermic and after ignition they quickly form a stable flame. The spectra provided metal lines, and band systems of the corresponding oxides and fluorides.
