Titel
A new fluid-driven spindle - concept, function and performance in MicroCutting of dies and molds
Abstract
This paper presents the concept, function and performance of unique fluid-driven jet spindle for micro milling and drilling on dies and molds with small tool diameters. The spindles with rotation speeds of up to 90,000 rpm using air and 30,000 rpm using coolant can be applied on conventional and parallel kinematic machine tools. The actuation concept of the new jet spindle reflects some special characteristics during machining operations. The resulting performance as regards surface quality and geometrical accuracy while finishing of dies and molds made of aluminum and steel is presented as a function of machining conditions and spindle properties. As a result, economical advantages, adapted machining strategies and limits of cutting conditions for reliable and repeatable machining operations could be defined and demonstrated with the new and innovative jet spindle.
