Abstract
Today's challenges in the die and mold industry require a broad perspective of the many factors for a successful, productive and profitable machining process. It is not enough to have good equipment or updated CAM software, but is essential to optimize the combination of the various parameters and the complete machining chain. This paper describes the development, unique features and some industrial applications of new cutting tools used for machining dies and molds. Achieving High Performance Cutting (HPC) requires high stiffness of the machine, fixtures, adaptation and cutting tools, optimal design of the cutting tool and cutting edge in order to minimize vibration, forces, power and energy, as well as to achieve optimal machining conditions. Furthermore, the selection of the optimal tool path and the right indexing of tool runout can improve tool life and increase productivity.
