Abstract
High performance ceramic components for space propulsion systems have to fulfill their function in the combine with metallic components. For the realization of a permanent connection zone between a CMC component and associated metallic component as well as for the suitable load transmission special metal/ceramic joining techniques have to be developed. The durable compound of ceramic and metallic materials in thermomechanical strain is prerequisite for this. The reason for appearing loads has to be found in the significant different of thermal expansion coefficients between ceramic composites and metallic materials. Due to these partly strongly differing CTE's at high temperatures tensions are induced which would drive the connection zone of ceramic and metal to the failure. To counteract this problem, several approaches are examined for durable, efficient connections able to work between ceramic and metal at EADS-ST Propulsion & Equipments. The active brazing technique with preparations suitable for joints regarding to the component geometry represents a base solution. To this plumbline systems have to be developed and modified permanently for customization purposes. The combination of high performance materials with adapted joint technologies shows a great potential in the context of research and development in the aerospace and non-aerospace area.
